Hazel Blears MP has announced another 14600 houses for this area this is the same person that said yes to the Longford site even though it was proved that it floods, this is the same person who said yes to the Homelands farm site in Bishops Cleeve which will exacerbate flooding in Tewkesbury. Hazel Blears said in Parliament that she would not do anything to increase flooding and she backed the Pitt Report. Who is being "economical with the truth".
At an open meeting of the Town Council on 30th July at the Watson Hall it was proposed and passed that a referendum of the Borough is held on the proposed building of houses put forward by the Regional Spatial Strategy Panel (a Government Quango) for Gloucestershire. We hope that the people of the Borough will vote against the building of these houses until such times the infrastructure and flood defences for the area is put right with a substantial injection of money from the Government. When we say a substantial amount we mean a minimum of £50 million not the sympathy we have had from John Healey so far, sympathy get you no where.

The TBC has awarded an alcohol license to P J Nicholls we believe residents failed in their opposition because we did not follow the strict system put down by the Government when we all gave evidence for rejecting it. NACRA urge all residents to document every detail of anti social behaviour over the next six months - pictures witnesses etc and report every incident to the police no matter how small and keep a note of the incident number they give you. All this would come in handy if we need to launch a review of the license.
During the recent O.A.R.A
Oldbury Residents meeting it was suggested that we get together to form
an association to include all resident associations and interested
party's, to fight the issues of parking within the town as a whole, and
to coordinate any ongoing actions i.e. nuisance parking, residents
parking etc. We would welcome members from your associations to get
involved in forming the Tewkesbury Parking Action Group,( T.P.A.G) Both
Kim Benbow and myself have expressed an interest to push this and I'm
sure John Dixon ,when back from holiday would like to become involved
to. If you are interested in joining us or have any ideas please don't
hesitate to contact ASAP.
N.B. The T.P.A.G is to be set up just to deal with all issues related
with Tewkesbury's parking ( and not to have to worry about other town
issues)

The NACRA and Severn and Avon Valley Combined Flood Group's representative at the ABI Seminar on Flooding reported that the ABI showed a very emotional film on the flooding of Tewkesbury, there were representatives from Wychavon, Hereford, Worcester, Oxford councils but no representatives from the Tewkesbury Borough Council. Why? Is flooding still not very high on the TBC's agenda?

Is it or isn't it
Finally we have confirmation from a government representative that the Government does not care where houses are built as long as the insurance industry pays for damage done to existing houses. The Severn and Avon Valley Combined Flood Group received a letter from David Stritch Planning - Resources and Environment Policy Division of the Department for Communities and Local Government intimating this. But we believe that this is not Government policy but the way different people interpret the government document PPS25. David Stritch is in the same department as Peter Bide one of the authors of the document and we get two different answers.
We have had different interpretations from other government departments especially from the Environment Agency, who are supposed to be in the frontline of flooding matters. A lot of work is needed to get everyone on the right track as far as PPS25 is concerned.

Despite all the correspondence from around the Borough to the Tewkesbury Borough Council they are still rolling over to the Government about allocating land for building in and near the floodplain. They have just issued a consultation document for allocating land for building called the Strategic Housing Land Availability Assessment (SHLAA). They say it is not necessary that the land identified will be used for housing but we all know that once identified nothing will stop them. This was confirmed when the TBC did a U-turn on the Homelands application. The U-turn was not put to the full council for a vote just passed by the officers.

The South West Regional Spatial Strategy has just recently been released and once again it looks as though Tewkesbury will be the dumping ground for another 2000+ houses the authorities still have not learnt the lessons and listened to the public, it looks as though we are going to have a fight on our hands and it is one that we need to win. Watch this space.
